Plan wallpaper by drops, not just square feet

A wallpaper drop is one vertical strip hung from the top of a wall to its bottom. A roll can contain plenty of square footage and still fail to provide the number of complete strips you need. The last few feet may be too short for another drop, and a large pattern repeat can use extra length on every cut. This wallpaper calculator starts with the wall dimensions, finds the complete drops available from the actual roll length, and rounds the shopping quantity up to whole packages. It also shows how a repeat or a taller ceiling changes that yield.

Measure each wall separately. Enter the width along the finished face and the greatest height that the strip must cover. Four walls of a rectangular room can be entered as two equal pairs, but do not simply divide the room perimeter by the roll width: the last partial-width strip at each corner still consumes a drop. This tool rounds each wall independently before pooling drops of the same effective cut length. Different cut lengths are budgeted as separate batches, so the result does not promise that every short offcut can be used on another wall.

The drop calculation step by step

Use consistent length units for the arithmetic. In US mode the wall inputs and roll length are in feet, while roll width, pattern repeat, and trimming allowance are in inches. Metric mode uses meters for walls and roll length, and centimeters for the smaller measurements. Changing the unit selector converts valid entries already on the form, including added doors and windows. It does not reinterpret a ten-foot wall as a ten-meter wall. Internally, the calculator retains unrounded geometry and only shortens the displayed decimals.

Gross drops for each wall = ceil(wall width ÷ roll width)
Base cut length = wall height + total top/bottom trim
Straight match cut = ceil(base cut length ÷ repeat) × repeat
Half-drop allowance = straight match cut + repeat ÷ 2
Drops per roll = floor(actual roll length ÷ effective cut length)
Working rolls per cut-length batch = ceil(required drops ÷ drops per roll)

“Ceil” rounds up; “floor” rounds down. Random match uses the base cut length directly, even if a nonzero repeat is entered. A zero repeat also uses the base length for any match selection. The default trim allowance is four inches total, shared between the top and bottom; it is not four inches at each end. Set trim to zero to inspect the bare-height formula, then enter the allowance specified by your installer or product instructions before ordering.

For a ten-foot-wide, eight-foot-high wall, a 21-inch roll width requires ceil(120 ÷ 21) = six drops. With four inches of trim and a 21-inch straight repeat, the base cut is 100 inches and the effective cut becomes 105 inches. A 33-foot roll is 396 inches long and provides floor(396 ÷ 105) = three drops. Six drops require two working rolls. Choosing one spare makes three physical rolls to purchase. The unused portion of each working roll is 81 inches, but that offcut is not another full-height strip.

The single-roll and double-roll shopping trap

Read the dimensions and package description rather than relying on a square-foot coverage badge. Our specified US single-roll preset is 21 inches wide by 33 feet long; our double-roll preset is the same width by 66 feet. These are calculator assumptions, not universal retail dimensions. Other brands may package different lengths under similar names. A quoted usable coverage of about 27 square feet must not replace the actual 33-foot length in a drop calculation. A 21-inch by 33-foot piece has 57.75 square feet of gross paper before cutting or pattern loss.

A product priced in single-roll units can arrive as double-roll bolts. Brewster's wallpaper specifications describe single-roll pricing and double-roll packaging, as well as straight and drop matches. Confirm your own product label. With our 66-foot preset, the result is already a count of physical double rolls; the parenthetical number is twice that count for single-roll billing units. Enter the cost of one physical double roll in the price field. If the store quotes a single-roll price, multiply that price by two before entering it. Do not halve the calculator's physical roll count again.

The Euro preset uses the requested approximate imperial dimensions of 20.5 inches by 33 feet. Common metric descriptions such as 52 centimeters by 10.05 meters are close, but not exactly equal to those values. If the printed label is metric, select custom and enter those exact dimensions in metric mode. The 27-inch preset assumes a 33-foot length. Custom also lets you specify a different length and choose whether the package is labeled single, double, or simply a roll. No preset replaces checking the actual product.

Straight match, random match, and half-drop

With a straight match, the motif lines up at the same level on neighboring strips. Rounding the cut to a multiple of the vertical repeat budgets length for that alignment. A random match does not require that vertical repeat allowance, although trimming and careful handling still matter. Always use the match printed on the wallpaper label. A visually subtle pattern is not automatically random match, and stripes can have their own hanging instructions.

Half-drop designs offset neighboring strips by half a repeat. This tool applies the requested conservative planning rule: first round height plus trim up to a whole repeat, then add half the repeat to each effective drop. For the 100-inch base and 21-inch repeat above, that is 105 + 10.5 = 115.5 inches. The roll still provides three drops, but another height or roll length can cross a threshold and lose one complete drop per roll. This allowance is a budgeting model, not a numbered installation sequence; alternating rolls or manufacturer-specific instructions can change real cutting waste.

Doors and windows: subtract area with care

Add each opening to the wall it belongs to and enter its width, height, and quantity. The calculator subtracts the opening area from the net wall area. In conservative mode, a partial-height door or window does not remove full-height drops because you still need paper above, below, or beside it. A full-height opening can credit complete strips; because seam positions are unknown, we use the cautious count max(0, ceil(opening width ÷ roll width) − 1). Enter nonoverlapping openings and check measurements when repeated openings share a wall.

The optional area-credit mode removes floor(total opening area ÷ one full-drop wall area) drop-equivalents from each wall. That is an optimistic estimate of short-piece reuse, not a measured seam layout. A window may leave two short pieces that cannot both be cut from the same offcut with the correct motif. Compare the conservative and optimistic quantities, and ask your installer to confirm any reduction before buying. If the credited stock cannot cover the remaining area, the result explicitly flags the shortfall instead of presenting a negative waste rate.

What the waste percentage includes

The displayed unused-area percentage is (purchased gross paper area − net wall area) ÷ purchased gross paper area × 100. It includes the spare rolls you selected, unused roll tails, trim, pattern allowances, width cutoffs, and opening cutouts. An unopened spare is useful stock rather than actual installation scrap, so this percentage is a purchase allowance measure. The offcut length is reported separately for working rolls only. We do not add another automatic waste percentage to the roll count: you control the spare quantity explicitly.

Keep an extra roll from the same batch

One extra physical roll is a practical starting setting when you want material for a damaged strip or a later repair, but it is your choice rather than a guaranteed requirement. Choose zero to see the working quantity alone, or increase it for a difficult layout. The added spare is the selected physical package, so one spare double roll costs and contains more than one spare single roll. The estimated dollar total includes working rolls and spares, excludes tax, shipping, tools, adhesive, and labor, and uses only the unit price you provide.

Check that every roll carries the same batch, dye-lot, or run number before cutting. Different production lots can have visible color differences even when the design name is identical. Order the reserve at the same time as the working rolls when possible, inspect the unopened labels and pattern, and keep the labels for future reference. A matching roll purchased months later may be difficult to obtain. Follow the supplier's inspection and return conditions before opening or cutting anything.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a repeat sometimes make no difference to the roll count?

The cut becomes longer, but the roll may still hold the same whole number of drops. The quantity changes at a threshold, not continuously. Compare the effective cut and drops-per-roll columns to see whether a threshold was crossed.

Can I use it for peel-and-stick wallpaper?

Yes, if it comes as continuous rolls and you enter the actual width, length, repeat, and match. Precut panels, murals, and numbered image sets need their own supplier layout and are not modeled by a roll-yield formula.

Does half-drop mean I divide the roll count by two?

No. Half-drop describes the pattern offset. It adds a half-repeat allowance to the effective cut in this model. It has no connection to single-roll versus double-roll packaging.

Will a door reduce the purchase quantity?

It always reduces the net area when entered correctly. A partial-height door keeps full drops in conservative mode. Area-credit mode can reduce the count if enough opening area forms a full-drop equivalent, but that saving requires a workable short-piece cutting plan.

What if one drop is longer than the roll?

The calculator stops and asks you to check the wall height, repeat, trim, or roll length. A roll with zero complete drops cannot supply that wall. It does not automatically join short pieces horizontally.

Can I calculate walls with different heights?

Yes. Each wall gets its own effective cut length. Equal cut lengths share a roll pool; different lengths are budgeted separately. Optimizing mixed cuts in one roll can save stock, but needs a detailed pattern-aware cut list beyond this estimator.
